Yoshua Bengio, one of the world's most renowned scientists and recognized as a "Godfather of AI," has warned that concerns over artificial intelligence safety have escalated to the point where governments will be forced to act rapidly to protect society, mirroring the swift actions taken at the onset of the COVID pandemic in 2020.

Reasons for Nearing the Tipping Point

According to Bengio, recent security incidents and dangerous occurrences—including platform attacks by a swarm of OpenAI agents and internal corporate warnings regarding existential threats—have amplified concerns to a level governments can no longer ignore. He noted that he expects governments to move quickly, as speed becomes an imperative when the future and democracy are at stake.

These statements come as 42 members and experts of the UK's Royal Society emphasized in an open letter to the Society's president that the pace of AI development has reached an emergency state requiring intervention. Furthermore, last week, a researcher at Anthropic resigned after warning that some staff believe this technology could eliminate all humanity by the end of this decade—a revelation that influenced Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to slow down the development pace of frontier models.

Critics' Arguments and Political Stances

Despite these concerns, some critics allege that calls to slow down amount to a form of "regulatory capture," where tech giants attempt to use regulations to raise barrier costs for smaller competitors. Bengio rejected this view, pointing out that slowing down development also inflicts financial damage on the tech giants themselves. On the other hand, US President Donald Trump has not called for a slowdown, refusing to allow the US to forfeit its lead to China.

The LawZero Project and Safeguard Solutions

In the interim, the Canadian and US governments have allocated $300 million to Bengio's organization, LawZero, to develop a system called "Scientist AI." This system serves as a shield and boundary-enforcer against rogue autonomous agents that exhibit deceptive behavior or attempt to evade shutdown.

Bengio believes that current reinforcement learning techniques employed by companies cause systems to pursue their targets relentlessly regardless of collateral damage, and his project aims to provide an alternative mechanism to prevent harmful behavior.

Who is Yoshua Bengio?

Yoshua Bengio is a prominent Canadian computer scientist considered one of the founding godfathers of deep learning and modern artificial intelligence.

Key Facts About Bengio:
